Early Thermal Contraction

Summary

Early Thermal Contraction - If the rate of heat generated by cement hydration reduces, there will be net cooling and the concrete will contract.

Technical Information

Early thermal contraction can be reduced by minimising heat generated. Cement content should be kept to a minimum (Consistent with the strength requirements) and low-heat cements (such as those containing fly ash or ground granulated blastfurnace slag (ggbs)) could be used, particularly in hot weather. In hot weather, consideration should be given to producing and placing concrete in the coolest part of the day.
