Recycled Aggregate

Summary

Recycled Aggregate - is crushed concrete reclaimed from previous structures.

Technical Information

Recycled aggregate is used increasingly in new builds worldwide due to an increase in the number of environmental laws, a greater environmental awareness and a desire to keep construction costs down. It is produced by processing concrete which has been retrieved from retired structures.

There have been some trials using recycled aggregates in ready mixed concrete; however, this is not currently a mainstream option as they must still comply with all requirements of the national standard. Before the aggregate can be used in concrete its composition and physical wear must be determined to assess its suitability.

Common uses of recycled aggregate are:

  • Unbound fills
  • Capping
  • Pipe bedding
  • Sub-base

Due to recent changes in industry standards in some countries, the use of recycled aggregates in concrete is likely to increase in the future as more is understood about their effect on the durability of concrete.

Environmental benefits of using recycling aggregates include:

  • A save on landfill space.
  • Reduces the need to mine or quarry new aggregate.
