Fine aggregate

Summary

Fine aggregate - is used in multiple construction applications, including concrete construction.

Technical Information

Most commonly, sand is used as fine aggregate in the construction industry as it is a relatively inexpensive material. By definition, fine aggregate particles pass through a 9.5mm sieve.

Fine aggregate is mixed with coarse aggregate, cement and water to make concrete.

High fine aggregate content has the following effect on concrete properties:

  • Increases the amount of cement required to make the fresh concrete workable. This also happens when the average diameter of the fine particles is reduced.
  • Reduces the rate of bleed in a floor slab. This makes it more difficult to judge when to finish the surface.
  • Increase water demand to the concrete mix.
  • Increases resistance to freeze-thaw.
