Screed (verb)

Summary

Screed (verb) - Screeding is the levelling of the surface of a concrete slab shortly after it has been placed.

Technical Information

Screeding works by scraping the top surface of freshly laid concrete so that any high points are removed and low points are filled. Some screeding methods also vibrate the concrete to aid in compaction.

There are various methods for screeding a concrete floor slab.

The most suitable method is chosen based on the following factors:

  • Cost of the method.
  • Local labour costs.
  • Size of each pour.
  • Required flatness specification.
  • The concrete mix.
  • Whether a gradient is required on the floor surface.

Screeding methods largely revolve around the type of equipment used. Some examples of screeding equipment are:

  • Highway straightedge
  • Vibrating handheld screed
  • Truss screed
  • Roller screed
  • Laser Screed
