Summary
Shear Stress - It is very important to know the magnitude of the shear stresses that a concrete slab is subject to, as failure due to shear is often very sudden and catastrophic.
Technical Information
It is important to consider:
- Any part of a slab suspended above the ground; from wearing of the soil beneath a pile supported slab etc.
- Shear failure in ground supported floors, can lead to a significant difference in height between the two panels, potentially leading to shear bursting.
Some examples of shear failure mechanisms in a ground supported concrete slab are:
- Punching Shear failure will occur when a considerable point load is applied; post-failure a radius (large twice the effective depth) will form around the applied load.
- Bursting failure may occur through load transfer system between two slabs.
When the shear stresses on dowel exceed the shear capacity of the slab, causing the dowel to “burst” through the slab.
N.B. These failure methods can occur in both pile and ground supported slabs.
