Using cement replacing materials in concrete can alter the following properties of concrete:

  • Workability
  • Sulphate resistance
  • Heat of hydration

Chloride diffusivity Some examples of cement replacing materials are:

  • Pulverised fuel ash (PFA)
  • Ground granulated blast furnace slag (GGBFS)
  • Silica fume (SF)
  • Metakaolin
  • Limestone fines

As a lot of cement replacing materials are by-products of other industries; they can be cheaper and more environmentally friendly to use than 100% Portland cement. Overall proportioning must be checked to ensure that there are no unintended adverse side effects from additional cementitious materials.
