Coarse Aggregate

Summary

Coarse Aggregate - is used as filler in many construction applications, including in concrete.

Technical Information

Coarse aggregate is defined as all aggregate which is retained in a 4.75mm sieve.

As it is the constituent of concrete with the largest volume, the coefficient of thermal expansion of the concrete is largely defined by that of the coarse aggregate.

Increasing the size of coarse aggregate reduces the cement content required to achieve a certain strength class. However, the maximum size of the aggregate is constrained by the distance between reinforcement bars and the distance between the reinforcement bars and the surface of the concrete.
