In industrial flooring, although it is possible to add pigment to a whole floor slab as it is being constructed, it is a lot more efficient to use a cementitious overlay containing pigment. Therefore, pigment is most commonly used in dry shake toppings, cementitious screeds and synthetic resin products.
It is not possible to achieve an intense colour by adding pigment to a cementitious overlay so if bright colours are required, it is best to use a synthetic resin coating or screed. When lighter colours are required, it may be necessary to use the pigment in conjunction with a lighter coloured blend of cement (e.g. one containing metakaolin).
Pigment can come in the form of a powder or a liquid. It must be inert so that it doesn’t interfere with the chemistry of the material it is added to.
Synthetic resin products are available in a variety of colours and shades. However, cementitious products generally have a restricted colour pallet available.
