Fabric Reinforcement

Summary

Fabric Reinforcement - is typically used in ground supported concrete floors, composed of a set grid of reinforcement bars prefabricated into a sheet.

Technical Information

The ‘fabric’ is composed of steel bars placed at regular centres in perpendicular directions to create a mesh of steel bars. Stock mesh in the UK has bars of varying diameter, ranging from 6-12mm and pitches ranging from 100 to 400mm centres; depending on mesh type / designation. Typical bar spacing is 200x200mm.
Steel fabric is commonly used in ground-supported floors and as supplementary reinforcement in steel fibre reinforced, pile supported slabs. The reinforcement should have a characteristic strength of 500 N/mm2.

Fabric reinforcement is elevated on spacers before the placement of the concrete to ensure that the concrete cover defined in the structural design is maintained.

Fabric reinforcement is typically supplied in sheets of 4.8×2.4m. Fabric with flying ends should be used to prevent excessive build-up of steel at laps.

The use of fabric reinforcement is common in industrial floor design due to its availability, cost effectiveness and ease of installation.
