Retarding Admixtures

Summary

Retarding Admixtures - (or retarders) are chemicals added to a cement mix to slow down the hydration process.

Technical Information

Retarders can be used to help maintain the workability of concrete when subject to higher temperatures, for example on a hot day. Warmer environments will quick-start hydration, in turn reducing the workability; for this to occur before placement is very problematic. This is known as a flash set.

Retarders are a particularly useful addition to ready-mix concrete, as they can extend the time allowed for the concrete to be transported from the batching plant to the site.
