The membrane should be placed so that it has no creases or ripples in it as these may increase restraint or induce a crack within the slab. To ensure that the membrane is continuous below the slab it should be tapped and lapped at joints.
For jointless slabs it is often advocated that 2 layers of slip membrane be used to further reduce restraint which may lead to random cracking. However the slip membrane will have little effect if other isolation details are not included in the design.
It should be noted that some gas and damp proof membranes are not suitable as slip membranes and the slip membrane should be treated as a separate requirement.
