It is generally more efficient to use ready-mix concrete rather than mixing concrete on site. Because the mixed concrete may need to travel long distances from the batching plant to site, there is a risk that the concrete will set in-transit. Agitating the concrete whilst transporting it decreases the rate at which the concrete sets, reducing the risk of the concrete setting prematurely.
An agitator truck can have a capacity of up to 25 tonnes. Inside the drum is an Archimedes screw which circulates the concrete around the drum, keeping it in motion. The direction in which the screw turns defines the direction in which the concrete moves.
Depending on the load taken by the truck and road legislation, these trucks often have more than two axles to support the large loads.
